Most people buy a robe based on a photo. Then it arrives, and it's either too thin to feel like anything, or so heavy it's hot after five minutes. The picture never tells you how a robe feels — and feel is the entire point of a robe.
We make robes for a living here in Santa Ana, California — plush, waffle, hooded, and personalized ones for homes, hotels, and spas. So instead of another listicle, here's the guide we actually give people when they ask us, "Which one should I get?" No fluff, no upselling — just how each fabric behaves and who it's right for.
The 10-second answer
- Lightweight, breathable, spa-style — and you run warm? → Waffle.
- Wrapped-in-warmth, cozy-on-the-couch, "don't want to take it off"? → Plush.
- Classic, absorbent, straight-out-of-the-shower? → Terry (or a heavier waffle).
Waffle weave — the lightweight spa robe

Waffle gets its name from that textured, grid-like weave (the same one you've felt on nice spa robes). That structure is the magic: the little pockets trap a thin layer of air, so the fabric feels substantial without being heavy. Ours is woven from combed cotton — the short, fuzzy fibers are combed out before spinning, giving you a smoother, stronger fabric that pills far less over time.
How it feels: Light, crisp, breathable. Cool against the skin in summer, but the trapped-air weave keeps you comfortable when it's cool, too.
Best for: people who run warm or live somewhere humid; post-workout, post-shower, and summer lounging; travel (it's light and dries fast); and anyone who wants that understated hotel-spa look.
Trade-off: it's not a "buried under a blanket" robe. If you want maximum cozy warmth in a cold house, waffle will feel too airy.

Plush — the wrap-yourself-up robe

Plush is the robe people put on and don't take off. It's a soft, dense, brushed fabric — think the inside of your favorite hoodie, but more luxurious — engineered for warmth and softness against the skin.
A quick honesty note most sellers skip: plush robes are not cotton. The plush, fleece-like hand comes from finely brushed microfiber — that's why it's so soft and so warm, and why it weighs more. Different fabric, different job. Anyone telling you a plush robe is "100% cotton" is selling you a story.
How it feels: Thick, soft, enveloping. Genuinely warm, with real drape.
Best for: people who run cold or have a chilly home; winter, mornings, and movie nights; and gifts — plush photographs and feels like a premium gift, which is why it's our most-gifted style.
Trade-off: it's warm (the point), so it's not your summer-in-Florida robe, and it dries a little slower than waffle.
→ Shop Plush Robes or our hooded plush robes.
Terry — the classic towel-robe
Terry cloth is the looped cotton you know from bath towels. As a robe it's the most absorbent option — it'll dry you off straight out of the shower — with a timeless, substantial feel. More absorbent than waffle, more breathable than plush. The trade-off: it's heavier and slower to dry than waffle, without plush's brushed softness. It's the all-rounder rather than the specialist.

Choose by how you'll actually use it
- It's a gift. → Plush. It looks and feels the most luxurious unwrapped. Add embroidered initials and it becomes their robe.
- For right after the shower. → Terry or a heavier waffle — you want absorbency.
- To lounge and stay warm. → Plush, every time.
- I get too hot easily. → Waffle — you'll actually wear it instead of shrugging it off.
- For a hotel, spa, or Airbnb. → Usually waffle for the spa signal and easy laundering, plush where guests expect cosseting luxury. See wholesale.
Two things that matter more than fabric type
After years of making these, two details separate a robe you love from one you tolerate — and neither shows up in a product photo:
- Construction. Generous length, a real shawl or hood, deep pockets, a belt that stays tied, reinforced seams. A cheap robe fails at the seams and belt loops first.
- The finish. Our signature is a scallop piping edge — a small detail that reads as "considered, not basic," and the kind of thing you notice every day. You'll see it on our scallop-piping towels, too.
How to care for your robe (so it lasts)
- Wash cold or warm, gentle cycle, with like colors.
- Skip the fabric softener. On cotton waffle and terry it coats the fibers and reduces absorbency; on plush it mats the pile.
- Tumble dry low. High heat wears robes out fastest. A wool dryer ball keeps plush fluffy without chemicals.
Frequently asked questions
Is a waffle or plush robe warmer?
Plush, clearly. The brushed microfiber traps heat against your skin. Waffle is designed to breathe, so it's the better choice if you overheat.
Are plush robes made of cotton?
No — plush robes are brushed microfiber, which gives them their soft, warm feel. Our waffle robes and towels are combed cotton; our plush robes are not. Different fabric for a different purpose.
Which robe is best as a gift?
Plush is our most-gifted style because it feels premium the moment it's unwrapped. Add embroidered initials for something they'll keep for years.
What's the most absorbent robe?
Terry cloth, followed by heavier waffle. If you want to throw it on straight out of the shower, choose one of those over plush.
